A Poem for These Times - by Jean Mahoney
And Deena Metzger's reading in SC, Sunday, March 16, 2025, 3pm
Dear Friends,
A few mornings ago my wife, the poet Jean Mahoney, wrote a beautiful poem addressing life in this moment. I have included it below.
And… I look forward to seeing you for Deena Metzger’s reading in Santa Cruz this Sunday, March 16, 2025, 3:00-4:30 pm, at the Resource Center for Nonviolence.
You can reserve your ticket HERE.
The reading is in honor of the publication of Deena’s latest novel LA VIEJA: A Journal of Fire and the re-issue of her classic book WHAT DINAH THOUGHT.
Taken together, these two books address key issues of our times: environmental devastation and Palestinian lives. There will be refreshments and book signing to follow. The reading is open to the public. Tickets are $15. No one turned away for lack of funds.
Please join us for an enriching community event during these dark times.
All love and blessings,
Carolyn
It's Like This These Days The stroke of the brush across the black paper brings colors alive Brilliant sparkle to the ever so dark It's like this these days My grandson's curly black hair his smile and energy Brings me alive a brilliant sparkle to the ever so dark And starlight still shines moves across the vision of our planet Moves across the vision of my eyes in the ever so dark The way the moon shifts her light lets me know that the exquisite lights of the night persist In this the time of the ever so dark How to find the light and keep it in my palm It is so close to springtime now that I begin to remember the taste of summer peaches Soon, Soon, Soon sun, water, earth and air will bring them here Here in my homeland the hope of peaches persist But I am not blind in the dark I have night vision to work and sweat my older body and quick mind to put my power back in my words to fight the dark as best I can. -- Jean Mahoney
